Please bring the following items to Mass:

	•	fresh apples and oranges

	•	potatoes, onions, and carrots

From January through September, the food pantry served 2,493 Damien Center clients, or an average of 312 clients per month.

Since a client can access the pantry for other adults and children in their households, the total number of adults served in that time period is 3,456. The total number of children younger than 18 is an additional 975.

On Sunday, February 3rd, at 2:30 PM, there will be a performance by the Kevin Kouts Quartet as part of the Arts at All Saints concert series. The hour-long performance will be followed by a festive Mardi-Gras themed reception in the Parish Hall complete with a New Orleans-syle menu of food and drink.

Admission is free with voluntary donations accepted.

The Kevin Kouts Quartet will perform a mix of traditional jazz and jazz/rock fusion tunes featuring composers like Billy Cobham, Horace Silver, and Thelonius Monk, plus a few of their own. The band is a meeting of musical friends of varying backgrounds and experiences who have come together to make music that is familiar, like comfort food, and at the same time fresh and dynamic. This will be their fourth year to perform in the All Saints series, and so far each performance has been great fun.

...And don't worry...there will plenty of time to enjoy the show and reception and still make it to your Super Bowl party!

Since the cornerstone for All Saints was laid in 1910, we're assuming that this card was produced somewhere between 1911-1938.

All Saints can barely be seen under all the snow!

...The photo was taken by The Rev. Rush Sloan, who was Vicar and Canon from 1914-1916. Here is a quote from "Episcopal Bishops: by Sarah Pratt (who lived across the street from All Saints was the mother or grandmother of Arthur Pratt, whom you may remember from Christ Church): "Once when All Saints and it adjacent trees and bushes were covered with snow, a young clergyman, the Reverend Rush Sloan, who was staying at the Bishop's (Francis), came over to our lawn opposite, and took a picture. This very beautiful picture the Bishop had made into a Christmas card, which he sent to Bishop Lloyd, of New York, and to the Mission House. The Spirit of Missions (a publication of the national church) reproduced it on its cover. ... The keyboards first served the Casavant organ that was at Christ Church on the circle before the Moller organ that was then replaced by the Wolff organ that serves the Cathedral now.

... The console and control systems, which were state of the art at the time, served the musician of All Saints Church well for many years.

... Through an extremely fortunate turn of events, Goulding & Wood came into possession of a console it supplied for Loyola University in Chicago, and the company was in a position to pass along the console for a small fraction of what a new one would cost. Indeed, while the $45,000.00 price tag for this project raised some questions during the evaluation of the Cornerstone Campaign (and rightly so), it pales in comparison to the more than $125,000.00 it would have cost had the console been all new.

... Members of the Goulding & Wood staff have been working on the console, preparing it for the All Saints organ, since December.

...Paul's Church has graciously allowed us to use their portative organ during this time as well, and we appreciate their generosity greatly.

...In addition, greater changes in sounds will be possible, so that hymn accompaniments can be more creative, choral accompaniments more sensitive, and solo literature more exciting. The sound of the organ won't change, but organists will be able to access the variety of sounds as never before.

...A rubber membrane has been afixed to the skylights in the roof of the apse to stop the leaking conditions. The leaks in the skylight system have continued to worsen and have begun to cause damage to the floor and furniture below. This temporary cover-up will stop the interior damage and will allow us time to plan for appropriate corrective measures when Cornerstone Campaign funds become available.

Slate Roof Close-Up

Our almost 100 year old slate roof survived the Good Friday hail storm in 2006. While the roof and copper flashing are in need of replacement, the slate shows no visible damage (holes or "dimples" caused by the hale). The roofing consultant notes that the slope of the roof and the direction of the falling hale are the determining factors that may cause the damage. The roof replacement which includes flashing, gutters and downspouts remains on the priority list for Cornerstone Campaign funding.

Mystics are persons who, in their ordinary lives, are so interiorly focused that they experience God, not only in times of formal prayer, but throughout the events of each day. God raises up, however, some especially graced mystics to be our mentors and companions in order to empower and encourage us in our spiritual journey. Julian of Norwich and Hildegard of Bingen are among the most famous of such mystics. The presentation will focus on their wonderfully alive and profound spirituality and will give guidelines on how to integrate their spirit and wisdom into our relationship with God, others and ourselves.

...That requires each of us to be open to thinking about our stewardship in a positive way. Sharing our time, talent, and treasure are all part of ensuring a future for All Saints Parish.

Because it is time to start preparing a budget for next year I need to focus on money this morning.

For half the time that All Saints has existed the operating budget has been subsidized by financial aid from the diocese. Times have changed, the diocese is phasing out the assistance over the next three years, we must take charge of our own finances.

If that sounds daunting think of it this way, we are supporting most of the budget already and the increase in giving needed to be self supporting is doable if we all do our share. ... That means those of us who have been blessed with more financial resources will need to be as generous as possible if we are to reach our goal.

...I think you will see that if each of us will stretch a little in our individual giving it is within our ability as the All Saints family to fund a balanced budget that will support program enrichment and growth.

Please join us in making the future of our community even better than the achievements of the first 100 years.

...Levitin says, “All of us have the innate capacity to learn the linguistic and musical distinctions of whatever culture we are born into, and experience with the music of that culture shapes our neural pathways so that we ultimately internalize a set of rules common to that musical tradition.” What I get from this is that we become programmed with certain musical expectations based on what we have been exposed to. ... We who grew up in the western music tradition, whether we are aware of it or not, are programmed to expect whole steps and half steps to come in a certain order. ... Other cultural standards place the whole and half steps in different places and the resulting scale sounds strange and unnatural to us, and our tonality sounds weird to them. ... If all beauty is the fulfillment of what our brains expect, then there must be terrible pressure not to do anything revolutionary - nothing new.

...It occurred to me during the mysteriously beautiful second movement that there was a time when I would have been convinced that the English Horn and the piano were not playing from the same score – other than the fact they ended at the same time and resolved into the same key.

...So the next time Jason plays something challenging and not so “soothing” for a postlude, why not ask him what was going on in that piece?

Acting on the Millennium Development Goals

<dc:subject>News and Events</dc:subject>

African Art Gallery owner, Jayne During, will present her charitable work with women and children in Zimbabwe and Ghana at the forum on Sunday, November 18, 2007.

On behalf of all of us associated with The Damien Center, I want to thank you for inviting me to be part of your education forum in October and, more importantly, for the very generous donations of items for the Damien Center's Food Pantry. Although I had to shift things around in order to see through my rear view window(!) , it was wonderful to have a car full of very much needed items.

...Thank you again, and I look forward to visiting with our friends at All Saints very soon.

Not only did we have a top-notch steering committee, but the responses you gave to those working on the campaign were truly inspiring. ... In fact, after 14 years, I still enter each and every project as probably the most scared person there. What helped me at some point was hearing the saying “Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the ability to control it.”

...I look forward to returning to see you and the works you’ve accomplished as a result of the campaign. ... There is still the issue of making those pledge payments over the next three to four years. ... As one whose own church went through three capital campaigns, this is how I approached the issue… First off, you knew from looking at me that physical labor was not my strong suit. ... So, it helped me to think of my payments as a swing of the hammer or the rumbling of heavy equipment to the project—with someone else doing all the work.

In any event, please continue to focus on restoring your beautiful, historical church – both in your annual giving and in maintaining your campaign pledge support.

...Again, I can’t thank you enough for giving our approach the opportunity to work.

November 11, 2007 — The Very Rev.
