Music has always played an
integral role in Christian worship. The early church
inherited from the Hebraic tradition an awareness of
music’s power to heighten and deepen spiritual texts. As
the Christian church developed, it relied heavily on
artistic expression to inform liturgies. Nowhere was this
truer than in England. The Anglican Church worldwide
continues to practice a corporate spirituality that finds
its most natural voice in song.
The Episcopal Church of All Saints believes that we are
called to be good stewards of this tradition, and in turn
our adherence to the development of liturgical music
enriches our worship. The texts of the Holy Scriptures and
the Book of Common Prayer guide our thoughts,
prayers, and meditations, and music enhances our
understanding and proclamation of these texts.
Music plays a vital role in the worship life of our parish.
Our congregation enjoys a broad repertoire of hymns and
service music, founded on The Hymnal 1982. The
choir leads services from the feast of St. Michael and All
Angels (observed annually on the last Sunday of September)
through Trinity Sunday.
The pipe organ, housed in the rear gallery, leads all
congregational singing as well as contributes instrumental
music to all Sunday liturgies as well as special festival
services.
Arts at All Saints, the parish concert
series, offers another important venue for spiritual
expression as embodied in the arts.
